She showed up two hours later with a carrier box and a cat with the most judgmental glare I’d ever seen. "She’s unbothered," Lia had said. "But she’s yours now. She sighed as she tried to shoot the depressing thoughts away. She was already used to being alone for most of her life, so returning to that circle again shouldn't be such a hard thing for her.

Mouse greeted me with a long meow. “Don’t look at me like that.” I hissed at him. “I know I could have been stronger, but I just can't deal with him right now,” I said picking the overweight cat up. “Maybe tomorrow I will go in late, but right now I feel like sleeping in.”

But I’d forgotten about the cat. In an effort to get him to bond, I’d locked the door of his carrier when he was using the litterbox. So far he just slunk from corner to corner, hiding behind things and growling if I tried to get close. So I’d left him alone in the room to try and relax. But when I stepped inside, he was up on the bed. For the first time, he tensed, but didn’t immediately run from me, just watched with wide, dark eyes.
