“This was from a free-draw session last week. The prompt was ‘My Family at Home.’” I looked down. Katie had drawn our mansion with meticulous detail. There she was, a stick figure with a yellow dress in the center. To her left, a tall stick figure labeled ‘Daddy’ stood at a big box labeled ‘Office.’ Lines came out of the box, like rays. To her right, a smaller stick figure labeled ‘Mommy’ stood at a box labeled ‘Bakery.’ Similar rays. The three figures were connected by dotted lines, not solid ones. In the corner, she’d drawn a small, smiling sun. But between the ‘Office’ and the ‘Bakery,’ she’d drawn a thick, black, scribbled wall.

Eli sat at the table drawing something intense and detailed. “What’s that?” Dominic asked. “Our new family,” Eli said without looking up. Dominic set the plate down beside him. On the paper: Four figures. One tall. One slightly shorter. One small. One smaller still. All holding hands. The tallest one had an exaggerated straight line for a mouth. Dominic frowned. “Do I look that serious?” “Yes,” Eli answered simply. Lila entered moments later and slid into the chair beside them. She studied the drawing. “We look good,” she said.

“See? We’re all together.” He nodded, small but certain, then ran to the living room to grab his latest drawing. He handed it to me with a serious expression. This one was more detailed: a depiction of the house, the driveway, and the figures inside it. He had drawn Adam and me holding hands, with Lee off to one side, and himself standing in front like a shield. Above it, in uneven letters, “No one separates our family.” My throat tightened, and I pressed a hand to my mouth to stop it from quivering. Adam leaned down beside me, brushing a loose strand of hair from my face, and whispered, “He’s remarkable.”

He pushed the paper into my hands “It's our family” “Is that so?” I grinned “Can you tell me who you drew?” I was a little confused because there were four people in the drawing. Me, Jeremy, Milo, and another man. Milo beamed. "That’s Mama, Jer Jer, me, and Daddy” My smile faltered “Daddy?” “Yes, my daddy” He smiled wider, even bouncing on his feet. “You did so well, baby. You’ll be a big artist someday” “Mama, do I have a Daddy too? Everyone at school has one but I only have Mama and Jer Jer”

I find Grandma in the kitchen. “She’s leaving,” I say quietly . Grandma looks up from her coffee . “You stop her?” “I tried.” She sets the cup down. “Try harder.” I nod. Leo runs in, waving a drawing. “Daddy, look! I made our family!” Three stick figures, Tall one with dark hair. Shorter one with long hair, Small one in the middle holding both hands. I swallow hard. “It’s perfect, Captain.” He beams. Elena walks in, sees the drawing, smiles too bright.

His bright eyes sparkled with pride. “Of course, my love.” I said with a warm smile. Kneeling beside him to help him secure his artwork in the perfect spot on the wall. When I finally saw what he had drawn—a family. My breath hitched. There they were—five stick figures, their arms outstretched, smiles drawn wide with bold crayon strokes. A sun beamed down from the corner, and flowers dotted the grass below their feet. “Daddy,Yandrich, Mommy, Daddy Nick, and Mommy Ally!” He announced proudly, tapping each figure with a finger.

"Deal. From now on, everything we do is a choice, not an obligation." My phone buzzes with a text from Lily's teacher: "Lily drew the most beautiful picture today of her family. She wanted me to send it to her parents."
