The silence that stretched between us made it clear—my little sister was not in a good mood. She furrowed her brows tightly toward the bridge of her nose, her lips pressed into a thin line. Every now and then, she’d zone out, staring at one spot, completely lost in thought. "Tanya, is something bothering you?", I tried to ask gently. "Is it about your birthday?" Her sweet sixteen is the day after tomorrow. She had planned something simple—just a small get-together at a café with a few close friends. Maybe she’d made more new friends at the new school and was now reconsidering the guest list?

I couldn't say I'm in love with your brother and living twenty feet away from him is going to destroy me. "I'm just tired," I said. "Long day yesterday." Sloane's expression softened. She sat down next to me and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. "It's going to be okay. You're going to stay here, get back on your feet, and then you're going to find a cute guy and forget all about this." I laughed weakly. "A cute guy." "Someone who isn't my emotionally stunted brother," she added. "Seriously. Don't let him get in your head. He's an asshole to everyone."

I would give her a peck on the end of her nose and help her to her feet.

"That's nice. I have a younger sister, she's like... obsessed with meeting new people. Once she finds out about you, you'll be on her radar." I raise my brows, amused. "Oh yeah? How old is she?" "Thirteen going on thirty," he says with a chuckle. "She thinks she runs the house. Honestly, she probably does." I giggle. "I think I like her already. I'd like to meet her one day." "Really? She'd love that. She's always complaining that I don't bring friends home. So now I can finally be like, see? I do have friends."

“Hey!” When we arrived, she called out to her friends, “Hey, guys. My brother gave me a gift.” The “friends” in the room responded and I nearly keeled over in shock. You see, when a kid says they have a friend, you'd assume it's a kid their age or even little toddlers running around you in cute onesies and shit. But that's not the friends my sister has. The friends in question were full grown adults. Each one with a bald head, hanging onto an IV drip and wheezing heavily.

The question caught me so off guard that I blinked a few times. “Why are you asking this? Do you want to have siblings?” I asked, and she nodded. “My friend Lily also has a brother; he is a baby who doesn't know how to speak yet, but she feeds him. It would be so cool if I had a little brother too,” she said, all hopeful.

“I’m… a friend of your mum.” The little boy let out a little laugh. “Mama doesn’t have any friends.” I let out a sharp laugh, bitter and amused. “Smart kid.” I bent slightly, lowering myself to his level. “Oh, we used to be very close,” I murmured. “Like sisters, back when we were your age.” The boy’s expression wavered slightly, his small hands gripping the stuffed animal tighter. “I only have one aunt and that’s my mama’s sister.”

Sabrina tells her, I smiled a little on seeing how cute she was, her mind was pure, I looked at Sabrina who was now pouring her some water, where was all this when I needed it? Where were the care and love when I needed it? I blinked back my tears, looking down at my laps, I didn’t want to feel odd amongst them but that was exactly the way I felt, odd. “What do you do, Sister?” Amy says, My eyes widen as soon as I heard that. Sister? I am sister? “Is it too soon? I just wanted to try it out, you see my friends at school call their sisters by that and I couldn’t wait till I call you that.” She says and gasped, reaching into her bag and brought out a mug.

”I didn’t know the feeling of having a little sister, but if I would be given a chance to have one, I’ll choose you. Slowly, a smile appeared on her lips. She rolled her eyes like she didn’t just sulked a while ago. ”As if you have a choice! I’m your only friend here!” We laughed. ”Hey! I have another friend.” I said defensively. She raised her brow like she doesn’t believe me. ”Who? “ I smirked and looked at her tauntingly. Her brows furrowed in curiosity. ”Lulu, this is Zoey, my friend. And Zoey, this is Lulu my friend. “
