I had written off everything she felt as jealousy and nothing more. Because of the forbidden ritual, I had been locked in place—my entire awareness narrowed to that one toxic woman. I had been so convinced that nothing was wrong with Elena, that she was too afraid to ever truly leave. I had taken her love for granted, her endurance for granted.
