When it came time to shelve the books, our great debate about how to organize them started. “This is where I had the mysteries before,” Isobel started, narrowing her eyes as if daring me to disagree. I just grinned, ready to play. “But this is a darker corner. Don’t you think mysteries should be in the darkest, most mysterious part of the room? Even so, the whole process feels like a battle, and I am already exhausted by the time I have the books in my hands. I still read romantic novels. There is something comforting about them, even if some of the stories hit a little too close to home. Some of the plots are eerily similar to my own life, while others are pure escapism—beautiful, heartwarming tales from start to finish. Sure, the characters face hardships and tribulations, but what always stands out to me is the love and trust between the couples. It is the kind of love that feels unshakable, the kind I used to dream about. Now, I am not so sure if that kind of love exists for me anymore.

I’ll try to gather some information.” “Get back to me quickly.” Michael disconnected the call and settled back into the car. Finally, he did what he should have done a long time ago. He looked up the author A.K. Crusader. He knew the man’s books only by their titles. Now he was curious. What Michael found only confused him more. A.K. Crusader wrote romance novels. A genre that was mostly written by women.

It was so pathetic it almost made me laugh. Once I had a lead, everything else came easily. Using Milton's birthday, his lucky number, and even a work ID he had once used, I pieced everything together. After an hour, I managed to find his secret social media account. A man who played with consent the way a composer toyed with notes—artfully, deliberately, with the kind of confidence that made my skin prickle and my thighs press together. One that was over too soon. The kind of book I devoured in a fever and now I was in need of another. Too much hope wrapped in pretty words. I pulled one down at random. Dark cover, brooding man in a suit, and title written in gold foil: Claimed by the Billionaire. I snorted softly, then slid it back.
