The rest of the class goes by in a blur, and I do my best to focus, but I’m way off my game. My mind is teeming, my body strangely energized, and I make a vow right then and there that I need to stop reading so many damn romance novels. I read one or two a day, fully immersed in the escapism it brings me, and I think they’re getting to my fucking head. I’ve always been a hopeless romantic, but it wasn’t until I hit my senior year in high school I discovered romance. I’ve been a complete addict ever since. But this obsession has not served me well, especially since my particular tastes these days are always the kinky variety involving handcuffs and safewords and dominants.

“She’ll probably spend the whole holiday in here if you let her.” I walked the aisles slowly, trailing my fingers over the books. Classics. Thrillers. A whole section of contemporary romance—Mirabel’s doing, mostly. She’d started collecting them in high school, said they were “escapist but smart.” I’d never read them. Too many happy endings. Too much hope wrapped in pretty words. I pulled one down at random. Dark cover, brooding man in a suit, and title written in gold foil: Claimed by the Billionaire. I snorted softly, then slid it back.

Camlo says, giving me a poke with his elbow. “No, I don’t “You totally do,” Ara pushes back. I let out a deep sigh. “Okay, yes, he’s a little, tiny bit attractive. He has an amazing stare, and the mixture of high-quality fragrance and old books is enough to drive me crazy.” They are grinning from ear to ear at me. “However, I am not interested in him. He is my new boss, and he is nearly twice my age.” Ara rolls her eyes. "What does that even mean, 'I am not attracted'?"

A sharp bell rang out, echoing through the night. A shrill voice announced, "The time has come. Let the bride enter!" A black carriage, lavishly decorated yet unsettling, rolled in slowly. The door opened, and a bride in a blood-stained wedding dress stepped out gracefully. "Where's my groom?" George hurried over, waving for the puppets to drag me away. He pointed at the players seated at a long table. "My lady, please take a look. Which one do you favor?" The bride lifted her veil. Blood slid down her face like melting wax. Her crimson eyes swept across the crowd. "I'm not satisfied with any of them. Not a single one looks pleasing."

The emptiness only made me crave him more. I should have felt disgusted, but I didn’t. Instead, I found myself craving his dominance. BDSM or not, I just wanted to forget Lee completely.I wanted something new, something beyond the missionary position and riding him the same old way.

Long enough for me to remember who I was before I met him. Turns out, I actually like romance novels. Not the tasteful literary romances Kenneth approved of. I’m talking absolutely shameless books with shirtless men on the covers, morally questionable billionaires, ridiculous amounts of tension, and enough spice to qualify as attempted arson. The kind Kenneth used to wrinkle his nose at. “Those books rot your brain, Jo.” Funny. I don’t think the books were the problem. I’ve also rediscovered cheesy rom-coms and psychological thrillers, all the goodies that Kenneth never agreed to watch with me because they were “too stupid” (the romcoms) and “too complicated” (the psych thrillers).
