Je suis devenue aveugle pour sauver Bruce. Pourtant, à la veille de mon mariage, la vue m’est soudainement revenue. Folle de joie, je me suis hâtée de lui annoncer la nouvelle. Mais j’ai été stupéfaite de voir que Bruce et ma cousine s’embrasser passionnément. « Bruce, bébé est en parfaite santé. Le médecin a dit qu’on pouvait faire l’amour. Et si on essayait dans le salon ? D’ailleurs, ma sœur dort dans la chambre. Ce serait excitant, non ? » « Tais-toi ! Ne plaisante plus avec ma femme ! », a dit Bruce tout en l’embrassant. Je les regardais s’enflammer, les gestes s’intensifiant et la respiration accélérée. À ce moment-là, j’ai compris pourquoi ils avaient soudainement développé une passion pour le fitness à la maison il y a six mois. J’ai plaqué mes mains sur ma bouche. Je me suis retournée dans la chambre et j’ai refermé doucement la porte. Je ne comptais pas dire à Bruce que ma vue est revenue. Ensuite, j’ai appelé ma mère au téléphone : « Maman, je vais annuler le mariage avec Bruce. Je veux épouser l’homme végétatif de la famille Blake. Bruce, espèce de salaud, je vais le larguer. »

"Pregnant patient, corpus luteum rupture, heavy bleeding! We need a consent form signed—now!" I stood there holding the clipboard, waiting, when a voice I knew way too well cut through the chaos. "I'm here!" Jimmy. My husband. The same guy who vanished on our anniversary—now signing off on emergency surgery for another woman. He didn't even blink before writing "husband" on the form. Still had our wedding ring on, too. He didn't recognize me behind the mask. Just grabbed my hand and begged. "Please save her. It's my fault. She's pregnant. I messed up. I love her. I can't lose her." His grip tightened. My wedding ring slipped off and hit the floor. I didn't say a word. Just turned and walked into the OR. A doctor beside me, totally clueless, beamed and said, "Dr. Meyer, your test results came back—twins! Your husband's gonna be so happy. Congrats!" I smiled, barely. "Schedule the termination after surgery."
