After I broke the neighbor’s antique vase, the punishment landed on his palms instead of mine.

Nyra stared at the screen blankly for a few seconds before raising an eyebrow, “Why am I looking at a picture of Professor Moore?” Elara turned her head sharply to her friend, tears pooling in her eyes, “That's my brother” Nyra inhaled loudly, the sound harsh in the quiet of the room, like she’d been punched in the chest. “What the fuck.”

“I’m fine.” She has a worried look on her face, but she leans back and crosses her legs. “Is there anything else you would like to talk about? Anything else happening in your life? How has moving in with your brother been for you?” Clenching my fingers around my chair arm, I bite my lip. “Fine. Just my brother, Adam, Will and … Cade,” I say. Why is his name so hard to say? I can only imagine the look on my face, since I'm terrible at hiding my feelings.

I told her. “It’s your first party.” Mum said looking me over. I was going to tell her it still wasn’t a big deal when Olivia came right back in. “Okay let’s go before my jerk of a brother leaves without us.” She announced. I felt my stomach twist in knots with Olivia mentioning her brother. “Is- Is- Is Brad taking us?” I couldn’t help stammering as I asked. “Yes he is. Hello? A free ride!” Olivia said taking my hands and gently pulling me up from the chair.
