The silence of the mine was heavy, broken only by the distant hum of the ventilation fans. "It’s not in the rock," Obi whispered, his voice suddenly calm, almost hypnotic. He walked to the edge of the pit, his hand hovering over the dark, undisturbed dust. "It’s behind the vibration." He reached into the dirt, his fingers digging into the loose shale with a sudden, violent intensity. He didn't use a tool; he just felt the earth until his fingers closed around something hidden deep beneath the surface. He pulled his hand out, holding a second, larger stone that glowed with a faint, pulsing violet light.

"Where the hell am I?" Nothing. My heart started pounding. I pushed myself upright, and the room tilted violently. I grabbed the mattress to stop myself from going over. That was when I felt it, a tightness across my chest that wasn't only pain. I looked down. Ink covered the left side of my chest. A symbol, large, intricate, dark, already healed enough at the edges that it clearly hadn't been done today. I touched it. Pain shot through the skin anyway. "What the hell is this?"

The silence that fell over the tiny, amber-lit cabin was suffocating. Dante slowly unzipped his soaked tactical jacket, his breathing shallow and ragged. He pulled the collar of his shirt down, revealing the skin over his sternum. The flesh there was mottled with angry, purplish-black veins—the physical manifestation of the necrosis that had nearly liquefied his heart. The pain had subsided to a dull, throbbing ache, but the biological reality of what he was carrying inside him was impossible to ignore.
