“She reads,” he says to his wife.
“She reads,” Penelope agrees, and there’s no warmth in it, only assessment, a woman ticking a box she expected to leave empty. “Plenty of people read. Reading’s the cheap part.”
She straightens, folds the recipe closed, sets it on the counter between us, and her pale eyes go cool.
