He looked at the jewelry on the floor, then at his wife, then finally at Karline.
“They refused,” he said quietly.
Karline blinked. “What?”
“The bank,” Matteo explained, his voice heavy. “I went today again. They said our income’s not stable enough, and after last year’s drought... they can’t approve the loan.”
Her heart sank, the world suddenly too small, too suffocating.
“But… but you said they were considering..”
“They were,” Matteo interrupted gently. “But considering is not approving. They said even if they did, the amount wouldn’t be enough for treatment.”
