Love’s Fortune
Arthur joined me, slipping in beside me, his body warm and solid next to mine.
We lay there in the dark, listening to the sounds of the forest outside—the wind in the trees, the distant call of an owl. It was peaceful, in a way I hadn’t felt in a long time. I felt Arthur’s hand find mine under the covers, his fingers lacing with mine.
“I love you,” he whispered, his voice barely audible in the quiet.
My heart skipped a beat, and I squeezed his hand, remembering how hard it had been for him to say those three words. “I love you too,” I whispered back, meaning it with every fiber of my being.
