“Or the heir of her blood.” They looked at each other, relief warring with disbelief. “Do we act?” The tall man hesitated. “Not yet. If we’re wrong, we’ll doom her. The Guxani still patrol the surface and beneath. But... we watch. We confirm.” The smaller one lifted a pendant from around his neck. A tiny phoenix, cracked with age. “We’ve waited twenty-four years.” The taller one’s jaw clenched. “What’s another day?” But neither of them believed their own words. They vanished into the dark.
