"So are you." "Victor severely underestimated how irritating I can be." Marcus laughed. Several agents laughed too. Lena looked mildly offended. "I wasn't joking." That made everyone laugh harder. For the first time in what felt like forever, the tension eased. Slightly. Only slightly. Agent Bennett entered carrying a thick black folder. My attention sharpened immediately. Project Phoenix. The name appeared across the cover. The same folder from Victor's photograph. The same project connected to Richard Kane. To Rory's parents.

I muttered, “I’m just... pissed. Saint’s trying to push me off the edge.” She nodded, "But what really happened?" She asked and lifted her gaze to meet mine, tears wobbling in her lashes. She ran her hand over my chest, and fuck, it was soothing as fuck. It calmed the rage in me. And her doe eyes? They did things no one could fucking explain to me. I told her all about Project 210 and what it entailed. I told her all about how Saint razed it to the ground without giving two shits about the hard work and resources I had poured into it. I showed her proof of the monster Saint was.

“All yours, Alpha.” I leaned in, watching as Xavier scrolled through the folders. Names like Project Winter, Project Obsidian, and Project Twilight filled the screen. Then, his eyes stopped on a folder. He froze. “Do you know this one?” I asked, pointing at the folder titled Project Blackwater. Xavier took a deep breath before answering, “Claire worked on this project during the five years she was gone.” Hearing Claire’s name made my stomach twist. I furrowed my brows and asked, “You didn’t tell me what happened to her.”

I wish it did because then, I wouldn’t have to deal with Any staring. “Project 236 will be concluded as soon as we get some clarification from the research department on the prices and the specifics about distribution,” Mr. Uriah, one of the main Project and Proposal team members says. “Good. King Nolan will not like so many delayed projects,” Andy says. I narrow my eyes on him, not liking how he thinks he can speak for Nolan. Andy merely smirks at me again, already staring at me from across the room. I can’t stop my hands from curling into fists.

I was trying to see if any of the other project names stuck out to me. There was one color that didn't seem to have very many binders, which made me curious. So, I grabbed one of the two black binders and pulled it down as well, sitting in the chair Victoria had provided. I opened it and saw 'Control Project' written on the front page. There was a red stamp on the paper as well that read 'CLOSED'. "What is this?" I asked, and Victoria rolled over to me in a chair of her own.

​Eventually, Foxe falls into a deep, exhausted sleep on the massive and comfy rug. ​I carefully disentangle myself from his arms and quietly gather my clothes. "I don't know why Cole would say that, Mom. My project was about… uh… constellations. Completely different." The lie hung in the air, thick and suffocating. My project had been a well-crafted solar system, each planet painted with care, suspended from a hanger. Zane’s "constellation" project, if it even existed, was nowhere to be seen. But she believed him. She always did.
