“Then do something to stop this!” I said, frustratingly desperate. It may have sounded like a demand, but in truth, it was a plea.
“I can’t,” he said, voice low. “They waited generations for this. It’s a promise that shall never be broken.”
A promise? I scoffed softly, bitterness rising in my throat.
“If it’s a promise, they should’ve told us beforehand!” I leaned forward, my voice shaking. “You already had a fiancée, right? Is it because of this so-called promise that—”
