The third move was psychological. A broken window on one of Rotti’s cars. A deleted voicemail he never realized was intercepted. A shadow in his rearview mirror that never resolved into a face. Evan wanted him unsettled, wanted the paranoia to rot him from the inside. Every night, Evan returned home to Adrian with clean hands and calm eyes. He cooked dinner. He kissed Adrian’s temple. He pressed a hand to the small of his back and asked about his day as if he weren’t dismantling a man piece by piece when Adrian wasn’t looking.

I pressed the upper right corner. The panel released. The space behind it was empty. I stood very still. I pressed the panel closed and opened it again — the involuntary repetition of a person whose mind refuses the first delivery of information and requires a second confirmation.
