Beyond Night
A voice commanded, “State your name and rank, soldier.”
Eyes blinked, and the parched mouth opened, but gave no sound.
The officer on horseback ordered, “Give him wine. Loosen that tongue up for us.”
“I bet he has some tale to tell,” one of the other soldiers stated.
Once he sat up, cradled by two Roman soldiers, and wine had washed the man’s gullet, he sputtered, “I am Flavius Varius, fourth Tribuni Augusticlavii to the 9th Legion of Rome.”
