I replied, keeping my expression perfectly neutral as I turned to face her. "Don't insult my intelligence," Valerie said, walking slowly toward me, her boots crunching rhythmically in the deep snow. "I've fought across the northern borders for a decade. I know a warrior when I see one. The way you balance your weight, the lack of fear in your eyes when an Alpha growls you are no low-ranking Omega orphan." She stopped less than two feet away, her ice-blue eyes boring into mine. "And yet," Valerie continued, leaning in close enough that I could smell the metallic tang of winter on her breath, "your scent is completely dead. It’s a beautifully crafted lie. But every lie has a flaw."

He simply let out a low, heavy breath, his massive shoulders squared against the damp chill as he led the way up into the dark. When they reached the stone platform, the storm was nothing more than a distant, rumbling bruise on the horizon, leaving the air thick with the sharp static of lightning and the scent of wet heather. Valarian stepped to the edge of the parapet, his tailored charcoal coat whipping around his thighs in the wind. When he turned back to face the Viking warrior, the playful, quick-witted grin was entirely gone. His hazel eyes were flashing with a sharp, primordial intensity—the terrifying aura of a vampire who had walked the earth for six centuries.

My vision blurred, the world tilting dangerously— And then, I wasn’t in my room anymore. --- A battlefield stretched endlessly before me. The air was thick with the scent of blood and smoke. She looked around to see Adira standing with a painting in her hand, Valerie moved closer and took a look at the portrait to see her mother almost naked and smiling as the artist drew. “Who drew this?” She asked with her eyes almost popping out of her skull. “I did,” Adira answered with a smile, “she’s so beautiful, isn’t she?” She asked as she brushed her finger on the painting. “She is.” Valerie smiled and Adira nodded. “I’m sorry—“ “Don’t be sorry. It wasn’t your fault and whatever happens happened because the goddess wanted it to, you shouldn’t be sorry about that.” Adira smiled as she put the picture away.
