Steady. Fierce. The sound punches the air out of my lungs. She points to a tiny flickering dot on the grainy screen — a microscopic pulse blinking in rhythm with the beatings. “That,” she says softly, “is your baby’s heartbeat.”

“Even if she does, she won’t recognize what you’ll become by then.” He turned away, and I smiled despite the blood on my lips. He didn’t understand. Rebirth was never about monsters or immortality. "Until further notice, we will use these to bring her back. I don't want to keep repairing her ribs. The tools can help fix the fractures, but too many repairs in a short time can be ineffective." Ten minutes later, the beeping stopped. Bart injected another stimulator, and her heartbeat returned. C'mon, Karen. This was repeated four more times over the next three hours. Each time Bart injected a stimulator, her heart would beat for some time and then fade out. "Conor," Bart said firmly.

Seraphina's POV The heartbeat sounds like a war drum. Fast. Fierce. Impossibly strong for something the size of a lentil. I murmur while gently petting the beautiful dog. The weight of pain coming from her is so strong that it almost squeezes my chest. “Her name is Coo,” her owner says quietly. “Okay, Coo. Would you be a good girl and let me check your heartbeat?” I ask gently. That seems to work because she relaxes slightly beneath my touch and after several tests and examinations, my heart sinks. Kidney stones and it’s bad. Cases like this always destroy me emotionally because their lives are so fragile already, they don’t live long enough as it is, and surgeries like this carry terrifying risks.

I saw that two of her legs were scalded by the fire and she could not move. She could not breathe and she kept groaning in pain. Good God, she is alive!
