My reading group argues about this constantly, and I think the easiest survival mechanism gets ignored: social integration. The smartest protagonists in stuff like 'The Legendary Mechanic' or 'Master Hunter K' spend their early chapters not on grinding, but on building alliances, joining factions, or fabricating a plausible backstory. The system might handle the monster waves, but it won’t negotiate trade agreements or spot a poisoned cup at a banquet.

That interpersonal layer creates the actual tension. Watching a character with overwhelming power still have to navigate court politics or hide their nature from a suspicious mentor—that’s where survival feels earned, not just gifted. The system becomes a cheat sheet for personal power, but the real challenge remains fundamentally human. Without that, you just get a boring power-trip where the only threat is a bigger stat block, and I lose interest fast.
