Some stared at Lobo with horror, finally stronger than fear. Lobo’s hand tightened around the ring. The cracked band screamed. Not like metal. Like a living thing suddenly disgusted by the palm holding it. Niall’s blackened eyes widened. The red thread between him and Lobo twisted violently, burning Lobo’s wrist until he cursed and tried to force the ring down. “What are you doing?” Lobo snarled at the ring, as if stolen power owed him loyalty because he had bled for it. The ring pulsed once.

"They gave up their power for their lovers." I thought of Julian, and a bitter feeling rose in my heart. "You will not make the same mistake." Damien turned to me. "Because you met me." "What do you mean?" "I would never ask you to give up anything for me." He pulled a ring from his coat. "On the contrary, I will give you more." It was a black ring, set with a deep red gem. "The Ring of Evernight," I recognized the legendary artifact. "Half the power of the Empire." He offered it to me. "Wear it, and you will be the Queen of the Evernight Empire."

My heart doubled its beat, and the rhythm was uneven, unstable, dangerous. The ring felt it. The whole platform flinched. I bared my teeth. Good, I growled. Be afraid. My fingers, now half-claw, curled around the flaming edge of the ring, and I pulled. The light screamed. It literally screamed. Leo smirked, "And what do you gain from this? Why should I trust you? Audrey met his gaze unwaveringly, "I had to travel a long while before I found your sanctuary. I have heard so much about you, so much I know our goals align. The power of the ring can grant us both what we desire most. Together, we can reshape this world to our liking, ruling over it with an iron fist." A spark of interest lit up Leo's eyes as he thought about Audrey's suggestion. He was someone who never missed a chance, always willing to take careful risks to gain more power. Could Audrey be the one who holds the key to unlocking the greatest power he sought?

Their parents cheered as Matthew slipped the ring on Ambrose's finger. "Wait, oh shit," Matthew muttered under his breath when he realized that Ambrose was still wearing his old engagement ring and wedding ring. "Let me get that off real quick." Ambrose couldn't help but chuckle as Matthew fumbled with the rings on his finger before putting on the new ring onto his finger. "It's beautiful, Matt. Thank you," Ambrose said, tears pooling in his eyes. "You don't have to say thank you, baby." "I know, but I want to."

I stare at the ring in my finger. And this ring, this damn ring which has become a real germ for all the poisonous illnesses, would be my exquisite pearl. I had worn it with adoration, with love. My life would have been so simple that way. Closing my eyes, I repress my thoughts. If I had a power to put curse on someone, I would have used it against Ben. I wish I had never fallen for Ben. I ignore the pounding music and noises of people's chattering in the background, don't know when sleep overpowers me.
