The Fire That Chose Me
“Training begins now.”
The training ground was nothing more than a wide cavern, its floor smoothed by years of use. Torches lined the walls, their flames steady, watching. Rowan stood in the center, his cloak discarded, his shirt sleeves rolled to his elbows. He carried no weapon. His eyes alone were blade enough.
“Show me,” he said.
Evelynn blinked. “Show you what?”
“The fire,” Rowan answered simply. “I need to see what you can do.”
Her heart slammed against her ribs. Her fire was unpredictable, wild. Sometimes it came when she didn’t want it. Sometimes it refused her altogether. And always, always, it left her feeling like a stranger in her own skin.
