Chloe stared in disbelief at the woman on the opposite side of the glass while she replayed the conversation she’d just had with her. “I do this for science,” the pretty nineteen-year-old blonde, called Sadie, stated with a thick southern drawl. “How did you come to know about Dr. Sudnik’s project?” Chloe asked. “Were you living in Philadelphia?” “Oh no,” Sadie said with a light chuckle. “I ain’t never left the mountain until the doc showed up. He paid my parents a goodly sum for me to participate. Poverty runs deep in the Appalachian Mountains. I was happy to do this to help the family.”

Sadie looked down. She could not help thinking about how ironic this was. She pushed away the glasses on the table, picked up the case of vodka from the floor, and put it on the table. "It's pretty slow to drink by the glass, Mr. Umbridge. It would be insincere of me to start small. How about drinking by the bottle?" Sadie did not become the top social butterfly of Seaport because of her beauty alone. She had brains and great emotional intelligence.

* * * * Chapter 1 SADIE Taking a deep breath, I stared at the imposing door in front of me, my hand flexing at my side. Was this crazy? Was I being crazy? This job isn’t what I really wanted. I didn’t want to be a nanny for some rich family on the Upper Eastside. I wanted to be a novelist. I wanted to write books that drew people in and changed their perspectives of the world. Unfortunately for me, I couldn’t make a living writing books if I couldn’t find a publisher to actually publish my books. Rent needed to be paid, groceries needed to be bought, and I couldn’t continue living on Ramen noodles and grilled cheese sandwiches.

The six friends sat in the living room in Lydia’s cottage, playing a board game, while Sadie read one of Arla’s werewolf textbooks for the five hundredth time. She let out a long, dramatic sigh, causing the rest of them to look in her direction, noticing the wistful look on her face. “Uh, are you ok, Sadie?” asked Sebastian, a little warily. “What? Oh, yeah, sorry,” she replied. “I just get caught up in the romance every time I read about werewolf mates.”

Davies and Liam said. Sadie walked to her room. She emptied her bag and removed the libretto. She walked to a couch and sat down close to her piano on the table. She began to play the piano and sang songs from the libretto. Davies and Liam walked to their room and lay on the bed. Soon, they slept off.

Sadie has always been a loose girl, Gabriella wonders how God gave her a daughter like Sadie. That's the biggest mistake of her life. Given birth to a worthless child. The day she will meet Sadie again, she will personally kill her with her hands. Who knows, perhaps she has a hand in their present predicament. Sadie might have given her body to old Mr Rogers and in return gained his favour by withdrawing from the company. Sadie is so evil! The thought of her angers Gabriella so much. Figured I’d swing by and grab it.” She narrowed her eyes at Sade. “Why are you acting so damn weird?” Sade laughed nervously. “Weird? I’m not acting weird.”

Something about how much it meant to her to do these things for me. My Sadie had those same sparkles for me, and it was hope. Hope and heart. For opening herself up to someone else so freely, so raw and with simplicity. Sadie never asked me for anything but my time. She never wanted money, never wanted things. I sure tried to give them to her. I’d surprise her with an expensive handbag, she’d leave it in my car and tell me about a movie she wanted to see. Once I gave her a diamond necklace. She left it in my apartment and put a note on it, telling me about a shifter park somewhere she wanted to visit. She wanted experiences, and she wanted them with me.
