She walked over and pressed the screen. A live feed flickered on. An elderly couple stood outside the front gate—probably in their seventies. The man was tall and thin, with a gentle stoop to his back. The woman beside him wore a simple shawl and held a large glass dish, wrapped carefully in a cloth. They didn’t look threatening. Just... curious. A voice came through the speaker. “Ma’am, there’s a couple here. They say they’re neighbors from down the private road. Wanted to meet the owner.”

"My assistance earlier was a simple favor, nothing more. Merely what any good neighbor should do." His deep voice caressed the word 'neighbor' with a subtle emphasis that raised goosebumps along the nape of my neck. I found myself caught in the hypnotic pull of his dark eyes, feeling utterly unmoored and untethered from reality. "We're hosting a backyard barbecue this weekend as a way to welcome all the neighbors and give everyone a chance to mingle." More than ten hours later, we landed. I went home and slept like I’d been starving for it. When I woke up, I realized the young couple next door had moved out, and new neighbors had moved in. So fast. If I had to guess, the new neighbors were Victor and Julian. And I was right. After that, I ran into them constantly. One evening, I came back from a dinner gathering and saw Victor standing under a streetlight, lonely and thin in the glow. When he saw me, he straightened, forcing a smile. “Grace. You’re back.”
