Try 'The Ronin' by William Dale Jennings. It’s a more philosophical and picaresque tale, but it follows a masterless samurai who becomes entangled with a woman running from powerful political enemies. Their journey together is the romance, and it’s constantly under threat from the warlords and factions they cross. The blend is less about grand strategy and more about how two people on the margins navigate a world ruled by clan loyalties they are now outside of.

Their relationship is a small, defiant act of personal choice in a society that values obligation above all. The politics are the ever-present danger, the reason they can never truly stop moving or let their guard down.

The entire narrative is a slow burn toward the climactic raid, but the heart of it is the inner conflict of the ronin: the shame of living as masterless men, the debates over the honorable path, the patience required, and the ultimate sacrifice.
