I twirl pasta around a fork, letting the sauce glide over it, then gesture for Zayn to open his mouth. “Have a taste,” I say. He opens his mouth and eats the food I give him. He savours it, his eyes gleaming with delight. “Mmm. This is delicious,” he says. “High five.” He raises his right hand, palm outward. I slap mine against his, and we both laugh. I move the food to the table while he brings in two bottles of water and cups. We eat quietly, stealing occasional glances neither of us understands. We just smile when our eyes lock.

I looked at him, ashamed. “You did it.” He pointed at the page. “That’s your name.” I blinked my eyes at what he said. I couldn’t smile, not really, but I gave a small nod. “Okay. Now, let’s try sign language,” he said, raising his hands. “This is ‘thank you.’ Can you copy me?” I watched carefully, then mimicked the movement. He nodded. “Good. Now this is ‘help.’” We repeated signs—slowly, one by one. It was hard, but I tried.

Since I don't understand her sign language, I shrugged as I dipped the spoon into the bowl, and then swoon backward when Sarah suddenly leaped forward, knocked the spoon out of my hand, and then kicked the bowl away. "What has gone over you, Sarah?" I yelled now with annoyance. I hadn't eaten anything since morning, and the sun will soon set. "Why did you do this?" Sarah gestured to me to reduce my voice. She pointed toward the overturned bowl of food, raised her palm toward her neck, and then moved it forward and backward. What was she trying to tell me? "I will die if I eat the food?" Realizing I understood made her smile, and she immediately nodded her head.

I didn’t understand the exact words, but somehow I knew she was insulting me again. That was it. I immediately grabbed my phone from my pocket in frustration and dialed my assistant’s number without taking my eyes off Nyelle. The second the call connected, I spoke immediately. “I need a sign language teacher starting tomorrow.” There was a stunned silence from the other side. “…Sir?” “You heard me,” I snapped impatiently. “And is there some kind of app that translates sign language?” My assistant sounded even more confused now. “Um… there’s an app called Sign and Capture, sir.
