My eyes blurred in and out of focus, the light in the room was blinding. “Focus, you need to calm down, slow your breathing, focus on the sound of your heart beating”. Her breath was hot on my ear as she seductively whispered. Breathing in and out, the sound of my heart beating became louder and louder, all the background noise fades. I was able to single out sounds by isolating and focussing on them, my vision was sharp, I stared at the bookshelf, focussing on the tiny words etched on the cover. I was able to read them, shocked I looked at Lenore.

When I saw the happy smile on Mom's face, I suddenly felt myself becoming lighter. I gently caressed her smiling, happy face, and I silently gave her my best wishes. "Mom, you have to be happy forever!" A crystal-clear tear slid slowly down Mom's cheek and fell into my palm. However, my body soon began to become as transparent as the teardrop itself, until I finally disappeared into the air.

Not blinking. Not saying a word.

To me. Silence descends. Real silence. Not the oppressive kind. The quiet after the avalanche. The wind sighs through the scarred trees. No screams. No psychic howls. Just… birdsong. Faint, hesitant. The ground feels solid. Still. The bleeding has stopped. Truly stopped.
