Lydia walked toward me, her eyes red. "Jennifer, please stop making this so hard on Harvey. You're the only one he loves. This baby is just to carry on the McKinzie family line. Once it's born, I'll leave. I promise." She paused and glanced down at her own feet. My heart clenched. The next second, she pitched forward and tumbled straight down the steps. Someone yanked at me. My lower back slammed into the corner of the railing. Pain shot through me so hard I couldn't breathe.

she said, with the specific acceptance of a child filing information and moving on. She looked back at Irina. Still crouched. Still eye level. "My mummy talked about you," Zara said. Irina went very still. "She did?" she said carefully. "She told me about you," Zara said. "She said you were her sister. She said—" Zara paused. Thinking. The specific concentration of a child recalling something they'd been told and wanting to get it right. "She said you were the person who always showed up." The arrivals hall went quiet.

Anne always recycled the same old tricks. “Look, my sister said nothing,” Jean said. “My dear brother-in-law, this sister of mine can’t live without you. There are few such infatuated women like her in this world. Cherish her.” Etan frowned as he saw no blessing but only contempt in Jean’s eyes. Jean tucked her long hair behind her and glanced over at Anne. “Well, I won’t disturb you any further if you want to complain. This is your chance; you have to think carefully,” she said.

Lifting his pinky, he asked with his voice pitched an octave higher, “Oh hi, beautiful. What’s your name?” Rose choked at the unexpected tone and behavior. Jay glanced at Jean with displeasure. “She’s your sister-in-law.” Jean exclaimed, “Sister-in-law? Who are we kidding? We only have one big sis, and that’s Rose Loyle, the crude and uneducated country girl.” Rose coughed harder, tearing up as she choked.

Not everybody had to be a warrior, she told her classmates, and though some boys curled their lips in contempt, the teacher agreed. “Svetlana? Sveta? I had a sister named Sveta.” “Really?” she smiled at him. “So, you can still call me ‘little sister’.” The bent pin holding her hair under the kerchief chose this moment to break, and her plait tumbled down. He gently tugged the thick fair rope of hair braided with a threadbare ribbon. “My sister was a pest. I bet you’re a good girl.” “I bet you pulled her hair all the time and this is why she was angry with you,” Svetlana giggled.

Ripped from her home, from her sisters… This thought seemed to finally pull Cassie out of her reverie. This was her sister. They were a team, her Nora and Evelyn, there is no way that this man was taking her without a fight. Evelyn, as usual, was two-steps ahead, already jabbing her finger in the chest of the Alpha, who apparently was named, “Roman.”

The next few months were busy; Mandy had me working like a dog and we still got together every Friday night and every 4th Monday I spent the night with Jennifer in my flat. I added another mature lady to my harem, it was Mandy's sister in law Jean, Jean and John's parents seemingly had a lack of imagination when it came to names. Ding— When the elevator door opened, Jeanette blinked her eyes and walked out calmly. As soon as she left the building, she saw a woman walking toward her. It was an unpleasant sight as she was none other than Madison Leighton, her half-sister. “Oh, sister. Why are you here?” She looked Jeanette up and down with a smile, and there was a hint of arrogance on her face. “What happened? Did Damon kick you out again?” Jeanette pursed her lips and wanted to ignore her. Still, she walked past her as she tried to leave.
