Sam's POV There I was, inside the hushed room where stillness hung thick - just the faint pulse of an old clock breaking the silence from its high shelf spot. Light spilled across the floor from my tablet, screen bright with one bold red ring circling the current day. Six months. Six months left before the deal ends.

I roll over and slap it off, wishing for just a few more minutes of peace. But I can’t afford to waste time. I have a mountain of responsibilities waiting for me, and my siblings depend on me to get them through the day.

From nine thirty to ten- thirty, study. By eleven, I be on my bed. Seven hours of sleep.”

Caelen POV In Week twelve, the morning sickness hit at exactly six in the morning. Every morning. Precisely six. As if my body had set an alarm for it and considered this a reasonable way to begin the day. It gave me just enough warning to stumble to the bathroom before emptying my stomach violently. This had become routine over the past four weeks. Wake up. Make it to the bathroom. Vomit. Try to keep crackers down. Vomit again. Eventually function somewhere around noon, when the worst of it had passed, and my body agreed to be inhabited again.

“Six weeks.” He nodded slowly, processing it. His hand came up and touched my face, just briefly, his thumb at my cheekbone. “And you’re okay? Physically?” “Dr. Hayes says everything is fine.” “But you’re not fine.” “I’m on the floor about four times a day, so no. Not particularly.” Something shifted in his face at that. “Come inside,” I said. My voice barely carried. He looked at me for one more moment. Then he stepped through the door.
