My head pounded before I even opened my eyes. A heavy, throbbing ache that made me want to sink back into nothing. But the ground beneath me was hard, cold, not the soft seat of a car.
I forced my eyes open. At first, it was all blur—shapes, shadows, nothing clear. I blinked until the dark sharpened. The air smelled damp, thick with dust and something metallic.
My wrists ached. I tried to lift them and felt the bite of rope. Thick, tight, digging into my skin. My ankles too, bound together so tight I could barely flex them.
