I shook him, but he was like a man made of stone.
I went back to the window. The goat was closer.
The chain hadn't broken. The tree hadn't uprooted. Instead, the oak was stretching, the wood groaning and splintering in ways that defied physics. The goat’s neck was elongated now, its head level with the porch steps.
Then, the goat turned its head. It looked directly at me through the glass.
It opened its mouth. It didn't bleat. It spoke. It wasn't a human voice, but a collection of sounds—the snap of a bone, the hiss of a dying fire, the wet slap of a butcher’s knife. It called my name.
