They got in the car. I pulled out.
“Mama, Sophie’s hamster got into Mr. Henderson’s desk,” Chloe reported breathlessly. “It chewed through two pencils and a worksheet before anyone found it.”
“That’s…impressive,” I managed.
“Sophie says hamsters are chaos agents. I agree with her assessment.”
Lucas buckled his seatbelt and said nothing.
He looked out the window. He’d been quiet all morning, according to Mrs. Falcon’s brief update at pickup—eating, at least, because Chloe had supervised, but quiet.
