“Then she already has it.” “Who?” Colton asked. “Elira,” Savannah said quietly. “The next war starts with her.” They all stood in silence, the city outside groaning under the weight of snow. Then Savannah whispered, “We need to find her. Before Weston does.”

And when she did—when the last bit of tether between who she thought she was and who she truly was snapped—then the Between would open. And the real war would begin. In the settlement, Kai had reached his limit. It wasn’t Elise’s silence that broke him. It wasn’t even the way people flinched when she walked past or the way they whispered her name like a curse they wanted to believe in. It was Thea. He found her in the war chamber late that night, staring at the wall where all previous Moonbreathers’ names were carved. Elise’s had been scraped off. The space where it once lived was now marked with a flat line—neither celebrated nor condemned.

I tried to step away, but he moved, blocking my path. “You’re lying.” His voice was low, the kind of quiet that wasn’t soft but dangerous. I didn’t respond. Because if I did, I wasn’t sure what would come out. Theron exhaled sharply. “You think walking away from us will change anything?” “I think it’s the only way to stop this war before it destroys us all.” His eyes darkened. “War’s already started, Elowen.” And before I could stop him, he reached out—his fingers curling around my wrist, tugging me forward.

“She was always carrying it.” Elara returned by midnight. Soaked in sweat. Eyes red. Her hands trembled. “Prepare the wolves,” she said. Kael stood. “Are we going to war?” Elara nodded, but her voice was softer and colder. More ancient. “We’re not going to war,” she said. “We’re going to reclaim the gods.”

We held there—locked, strained, eyes burning into each other’s souls, each one daring the other to fall first. The real war had begun. And it was just getting started.
