The work had already been set in motion long before I ever understood its shape. It was not finished. It had only just begun on a pale northern morning, the first Monday of spring in 2029.

He handed her his tea and she drank it and they stood at the wall for another few minutes in the cold that was already warming as the morning advanced and then she turned and walked back into the keep to the study and the desk and the blank first page of the second book. She wrote the opening line. It started: The break happened in January. She kept writing.

He began the story. His voice was low and steady, perfectly pitched for drawing little listeners (and tired grown-ups) into sleep. It was an old story—one his own mother had told him, he had once mentioned in passing, in a moment of vulnerability that felt like a lifetime ago—about a little fox who got lost in the woods and found her way home by following the stars.

There were no more strings, no more cages, and no more secrets. ​"So," I said, closing the book. "What’s the first line of the next 150,000 words?" ​Damian pulled me close, the "Vulture" and the "Bride" vanishing into the shadows of the Scriptorium. "I think we’ll start with: 'They lived.'" ​

“That is the one that matters.” Elliot looked at him. “Yes,” he said. “It is.” Adrian walked out. Elliot picked up his phone and sent Sera a message. Nicole wants to meet. Tuesday. I will tell you about it after. Then: How is the book. Her reply came quickly. Seventeen pages now. The introduction is the hardest part. Same as the paper. You have to say what the whole thing means before the reader has seen it and that requires a particular faith in your own argument. A pause. Then: Do you have it. The faith.

Phoebe laced their fingers together. "Thinking... that our story is just beginning." Outside the window, the stars lit up the night sky. The End of Book One.

“Alright, guide me then. Which one should I start with?” Noah looked at me, really looked this time, and then reached up and handed me a different book. “Start here. The world-building is cleaner. You won’t get lost in twenty made-up names right off the bat.” I took it from him like he’d just handed me gold. “Thanks, man.” He shrugged, but his ears were pink. He didn’t say anything else, just moved to the next shelf, but I followed him. “You ever try writing your own stuff?” I asked.

Anton’s trust had been the foundation stone upon which Sabatine had built his new world. “The before…” Sabatine said, shaking his head slowly, a faint, wondering smile on his lips. “It feels like a prologue written in someone else’s hand. A dark, confusing preface. Our story, the real one, started the second you chose to believe me. That’s Chapter One. Everything before that was just… gathering the characters.” Our story. The words hung in the air, precious and defining. They had a story. One with villains and escapes, with sanctuaries and revelations, with a foundation and an academy and a blueprint of joy. It was a story they had written together, in choices both desperate and deliberate.
