CHASING MONSTERS
She told herself this was what compromise looked like.
This was marriage.
This was love.
Ever squealed suddenly.
“Mama! Look!”
Pandora smiled despite the heaviness in her chest and stepped onto the porch, shading her eyes.
Ever stood inside the sandpit, hands lifted, face flushed with excitement.
“I’m building a castle!”
Pandora laughed softly. “That’s lovely, sweetheart.”
Then she stopped.
The sand wasn’t collapsing.
It was rising.
Not slumping or spilling, but forming clean, impossible lines. Walls stacking neatly. Towers holding their shape without support. The grains moved with intent, responding to Ever’s small hands as though they were listening.
