BETTY

The Virnkirk’s really do know how to throw a party.

Every corner of this house hums with quiet wealth, soft jazz, expensive laughter, and glasses chiming like silver bells.

I look around and recognize more faces than I expect to. Most of them are always on Harriette’s guest list and part of her circle.

I tighten my fingers around my glass as Rhys and Daniel talk beside me. They look entirely in their element — tall, confident, like two men who can own a room without saying much.

And though I try to focus on their easy conversation, my thoughts keep circling back to

Nathaniel.

He hasn’t shown his face since the confrontation earlier, and I pray it stays that way.

I can’t stomach another conversation with him, especially after watching how easily he’d paraded Amanda around like a prize he’d won.

Maybe that’s why it was so easy to stand my ground when he grabbed my wrist, because in that moment, something inside me finally broke loose and I couldn’t stand how he was speaking to me.

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S FORGOTTEN WIFE: My Husband's Redemption   CHAPTER 028

BETTYI can’t bring myself to go back home yet, probably because I’m still riding the strange high from the meeting I just had with Amanda. There is something else I need to do first, something I’ve been avoiding for far too long, and because for the first time in a long while I feel like I’m done running, done pretending that grief won’t catch up with me if I move fast enough.I place the lilies I bought back in town carefully on top of her grave, a shaky sigh escaping me as soon as I let go.They were her favourites.I remember no matter what went on back at our house growing up, no matter how bad things got or how loud the arguments became, she never forgot to replace the lilies at our tiny dining table. Never forgot that small act of beauty, even when everything else was falling apart.“Hi, Mom.” The words feel fragile as they leave my mouth, like they might shatter if I say them too loudly.I sit down next to the gravestone and lean back slightly, letting the sun hit my face dire

BETTYMy fingers wrap around the coffee cup, trying to siphon warmth from it, but the chill still clings to my skin. The cold this morning feels sharper, like the world itself is bracing for something.I am sitting by the window of a small coffee shop downtown, the scent of roasted beans and vanilla syrup wrapping around me as I wait.I’ve been planning this for days, replaying every word in my head, and now that I’m here, I’m not sure if it’s bravery or madness that brought me.After Nathaniel’s threat, sleep became impossible. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Grace’s face, her laugh, her curls, and the thought of losing her hollowed me out.He made it clear what he was capable of, and I knew I couldn’t sit around and watch it happen.I look up, and there is a man at the corner table who keeps glancing my way. I offer him a polite smile, a silent warning not to approach, and look back down at my empty cup.The last sip has gone cold.“Would you like a refill, ma’am? Maybe a cookie?

NATHANIELI check my watch for the tenth time, the ticking sound suddenly louder than my own breathing. It’s seven in the morning, and she still isn’t home.My hands flex at my sides as I start pacing across the room again, each step heavier and sharper than the last. “Where the hell is she?” I growl under my breath.Betty and Rhys had left the gala two hours before I did. I should have found her here, in her room, asleep—or at least pretending to be.Instead, I beat them home. And when I checked Rhys’s room and found it empty too, I knew they were together, God knows where. A bitter taste creeps up the back of my throat, just at the thought.I sit at the edge of the bed, pressing my palms against my face, trying to quiet the storm building inside me, but her words come back, clear and cold. “I’m done with you, Nathaniel.”“How dare she?” I mutter through clenched teeth, the growl catching in my chest. “After everything I’ve done for her?”The memory of her palm connecting with Aman

BETTYThe moment I step out of the Virnkirk mansion, the cold wind cuts across my face, sharp enough to sting. My chest rises and falls too fast, my pulse pounding in my ears, the words I had just thrown at Nathaniel echoing so loudly I can barely breathe.“Fuck,” I slap my forehead gently. “What have you done, Betty?” I whisper to myself, my throat burning as panic crawls up my chest.“I need to get out of here,” I start pacing in front of the grand stone steps, my nails digging into my palms.I hear footsteps sound behind me, and when I turn around, I see Rhys approaching, his expression unreadable under the golden light spilling from the mansion doors.“Betty, are you okay?” he asks.I shake my head, pacing again, my heels clicking sharply against the pavement, before my heel catches on a rough spot and I stumble, nearly hitting the ground.“Fuck!” The word breaks from my throat, panic surging through me.Rhys steps in front of me quickly, his hands slightly raised like he’s trying

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S FORGOTTEN WIFE: My Husband's Redemption   CHAPTER 023

NATHANIELFor the first time in a very long time, I feel good.Good in a way I can’t quite explain, lighter, almost giddy. The kind of good that only comes when you finally convince yourself that the storm has passed. The hum of violins floats through the air, soft and expensive, matching the rhythm of laughter that spills from every corner of the room.I stand beside Amanda, a hand at her waist, a glass of champagne in the other, and for the first time in years, I’m not pretending. She fits here effortlessly, her confidence quiet but deliberate.I watch her charm, some of my business partners who are also in business with the Virnkirks, her laughter genuine enough to make them forget themselves.Everyone seems enchanted by her, and to my quiet satisfaction, they have even forgotten to ask about Betty. It’s almost… peaceful. For a fleeting moment, I let myself imagine this as the rest of my life — simple, contained, clean. No cold silences echoing through the house, no sharp words trad
