I ran my eyes over the smeared words hastily, anxious to find the next readable part. The sign is rarely an approximation of the weakness itself. The sign, as signs so often are, is symbolic, rather than literal. Think of it not as a signpost, but instead as a message. Look at it as a coded message, perhaps, one that must be deciphered rather than read and taken at face value. There was more beneath, and my eyes roved across the faded paper eagerly. Before I could read any more, however, there was a knock on my door, followed immediately by someone poking their head into my room.
