I closed the book carefully. Set it on the table. Sat with both hands flat on the surface. Outside the library doors Ren was doing his steady patient wait. Somewhere in the estate Ryan Thompson was handling things the way he always handled things. Methodically. Strategically. Building infrastructure rather than reacting. And somewhere in Stone City Castellano was moving his pieces toward a person he believed was carrying something he needed. He was right. I was carrying something. I just finally understood what it was. I stood up.

Less institutional. What was true in the fourteenth year: she was forty-seven. She had written a book that people were reading. She had completed a succession transition that had passed the work to the right person. She was on the governance council as an elder voice and she was writing — not the governance documents, the next book. The first book had been about the healed territory. The second book was going to be about the long middle — the years between the break and the healing, the sustained work of the building. The account that the personal record had begun and that she wanted to finish in a form that could be shared beyond the family.

Josephine shook her head. His eyes darkened, and he extended his slender fingers to her face. "Hand it over." Her palms were sweaty from nervousness as she gripped the book tightly.
