Laughter erupted from deep within me, my body wriggling beneath him as I desperately tried to escape his playful torment. "I-I am!" I gasped between fits of hysterical laughter, my belly aching from the sheer joy of it all. "Please, Jace, please!" The three of them freeze, staring at me like I've done something miraculous. "What?" I ask. "You laughed," Alvaro says softly. "Like, really laughed. I don't think I've heard you laugh before." "That's not true—" "It is," Javier confirms. "You smile sometimes. But that was different." The weight of their attention makes me self-conscious. I duck my head, pretending to focus on my textbook again. "Do it again," Alvaro demands. "You can't just order someone to laugh." "Watch me. Laugh." "That's not how it works."

I gasped, grabbing a napkin and reaching across the table. Leo’s face crumpled, his eyes filling with tears. "I’m sorry, Mr. Tall Man. I'm sorry." I expected a snarl. I laughed because if I didn't, I would cry and I would be damned if I cried in front of a rodent like Ari Thunderbolt Black.
