Before I could react, she reached into her chest, pulled out her tiny red heart, and tossed it into the second lock on my door.
It clicked open.
Intestines Old man and the Charcoal Old Lady followed suit, each reaching into their chests to take out their hearts and offer them up.
The third lock clicked. Then the fourth.
Intestines Old Man smiled kindly, “And tell my daughter that her father was a hero, not some lecher. He died trying to save someone.”
Charcoal Old Lady added gently. “Good child, if you ever meet my son someday, tell him the fire hydrant was dry. It wasn’t his fault.”
