I rush out of my room, down the hallway, down the long spiral staircase, through the packhouse doors and into the garden.
She’s still there, and hasn’t moved an inch. Instead, she’s flipping through the pages of my book casually when I reach her.
The moment she hears my footsteps, she looks up, that small smile still there.
My cheeks burn in embarrassment.
“I’m so sorry,” I rush out, gripping the sides of my dress nervously, avoiding her eyes. “It was an accident. I didn’t even know you were standing there. I would never—”
“Emery Collins,” she says, cutting me off gently as she lifts the book slightly. Her eyes sparkle with interest. “You read her too?”
