"Serena, Serena Hudson!" Christopher's eyes widened after hearing her, letting the hair go of his neighbour who was still on her knees with a rude jerk. Christopher came out of his thoughts and again looked angry. This time it was worst, his eyes were turning red. Serena Hudson, his brother's woman. His sister-in-law who will be staying with him from now on in his apartment as per her mother's wish. Christopher never saw her until now as he left the house before she was even wedded to his brother but surely heard her mention from his mother always, Hudson's wedded her a year ago for his elder brother who seemingly never returned home after the wedding.

“Yes. This eagerness and determination are what I like about you.” “Thank you, Mr. White. I'm grateful to be here and be shown the light by the brotherhood.” Mr. White nodded approvingly, but deep inside, I scoffed. The brotherhood were nothing but leeches. Massive, bloated leeches clinging to the richest, biggest animals in the forest, sucking until the hosts shriveled into bone. They drained everything; money, influence, people, and when nothing was left, they moved on, wiping their mouths clean like they hadn’t just fed on someone’s life.

Then another. Fighting side by side. Then another. Arguing. Then another. Drawing weapons. Then another. War. God. No. Fair. That was tragic. Reasonable honestly. Then Lily studied the carvings. Then: "They were brothers." Silence. Then Henry nodded. Then: "Not by blood." Pause. Then: "But yes." Another pause. Then: "Brothers." The revelation hung heavily. Then Thomas looked at Arkan's face. The face that looked so much like his own.

Author's POV As the twin hunters, Gracko and Dracko, stood over Maxwell, their eyes blazing with an unnerving intensity, they asked again, "Where can we find the brothers?" Maxwell's eyes widened in incredulity. "You're still asking me that? After all these years? I don't know any brothers! I swear, I don't know what you're talking about!" Gracko sneered, his face twisted in a cruel smile. "Save it, Maxwell. We know you're hiding something. You're just not remembering yet."

Peering inside cautiously and seeing nothing dangerous, I stepped in. The rays of the setting sun filtered through the glass. Gloomy, yet breathtaking. If I had overcome my fear as a child, this greenhouse might have become my refuge from the Darvins’ constant harassment. I was so lost in thought that I didn’t notice the danger behind me. By the time I realized I wasn’t alone, it was too late. A scream died in my throat as a hand clamped over my mouth, and a strong male arm caught my body before I could fall. It seemed I could already tell the brothers apart by scent. Only he would do something so stupid.

"To men like Rourke, everyone is either a tool or an obstacle. Never a person." The next section shifted. New names, new dates, new secrets. A prominent merchant whose shipping empire rested on bribes to customs officials. A minor noble whose son had killed a prostitute in a fit of rage, the body was buried in a family crypt. A priest who supplemented his meager income by selling information heard in confession. Each revelation was a small death of reputation, of honor, of the carefully constructed lies people told themselves about who they were. Elara's finger stabbed at a page. "There. That one."

Rain lashed the tall windows behind him, mirroring the storm raging inside me. Victor Alistair Blackthorne didn’t flinch. He sat behind his massive desk like a king on his throne, reviewing documents under the glow of a green banker’s lamp, as if the world—and his son—bent to his schedule.
