Dead Weight

Dead Weight

Then he makes a sound. Low. Short. Not a word. Something beneath where words live. The entire left flank folds inward like a hand closing. Maya’s grip tightens on the radio. Marcus makes another sound. Different. The formation opens. He is not relaying information. He is not telling them where the dead are. They already know where the dead are. Everyone with eyes, ears, or a functioning sense of doom knows where the dead are. He is doing something else. Something Maya has no useful word for.

Where the Dead go to Die

Where the Dead go to Die

Every one of her steps ushered the cinderblock structure closer until it loomed overhead, and as she passed into its shadow, Emily found herself admiring how the building managed to be both nondescript and foreboding at the same time, a balancing act of utilitarian blandness that screamed government institution! The voice spoke again. No, not just spoke. It came at her. “That place belongs to the dead.” She paused. The speaker wasn’t in her head, rather somewhere to her right: an old woman with wild gray hair, dressed in black. Emily knew she shouldn’t be unsettled—that she was above all the theatrical bullshit that came with this territory—yet she felt her stomach knotting anyway. “The dead

The Pack's Triquetra

The Pack's Triquetra

He asked. “They’re not zombies,” Aislen told him. “They’re not dead. Or he doesn’t think that they’re dead. They’re people with a terrible disease. They can’t help what they do, and they don’t know that they’re doing it. They don’t know anything about what is going on. As far as they know, they’ve woken up from a nap into a world that they don’t understand as it is centuries more advanced, and they’re just… hungry. Very, very hungry.”

Fantastic follow up to the first book. I keep going back to the first one to reread the corresponding chapters. It’s so good to see all the perspectives. I cannot wait to see what happens next. Such a clever way to present a story. I’m hooked. I’ll read anything this author puts out at this point.

Back to the Day My Family Played Dead

Back to the Day My Family Played Dead

His eyelids were twitching constantly, but even so, he remained completely motionless inside the coffin. I couldn't help but wonder if Mom and Dad, who were lying next to him and faking their deaths as well, would become so enraged that they would sit up. After all, they were hearing their worthless daughter slap their precious son. In the meantime, the onlookers, who were shocked by my reaction, quickly stepped in to hold me back. I took the opportunity to bury my face in Lucy Hall's, my neighbor's, shoulder. "Why did I have to be the one left alive, Lucy? Mom and Dad are gone, and Draco is dead, too. How did the Lancaster family—?"

When the Heart Dies

"You'll say anything, won't you? "And on top of that, Scarlett was busy working. You're trying to pin this on her? "Are you even human?" Seth chimed in as well. "Exactly. We don't even know if this person actually died or not, and yet he's pulling this stunt to scare everyone."

Eclipse of the Dead

Eclipse of the Dead

It was late, and the base was quieter than I had ever heard it. The usual hum of voices and movement had faded, leaving only the low buzz of the generators and the occasional sound of footsteps outside. Everyone was either asleep or too exhausted to speak. I couldn’t blame them. It had been a long, grueling day, one of the worst we’d had in weeks.

Awakened After Death

Awakened After Death

"If you don't want to live, then you can die too." To my surprise, that one strike had not only killed Tyler but also awakened Evelyn. But Edith had already stopped listening to Evelyn's words. She stared blankly ahead, like her soul had left her body. I followed her gaze. It was where Tyler had fallen. I sighed and left the hospital.

Frequently Asked Questions

After finishing 'What the Dead Know,' I was left with this lingering sense of unease—the kind that makes you double-check your locks at night. Laura Lippman’s crime novel isn’t just about solving a cold case; it’s a psychological deep dive into memory, guilt, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive. The protagonist’s fractured narrative keeps you guessing, and Lippman’s prose is so sharp it feels like she’s peeling back layers of your own assumptions.

What really hooked me was how the book explores the idea of identity as something fluid, almost slippery. The twists aren’t just for shock value—they make you question how well anyone can truly know another person (or themselves). If you’re into mysteries that prioritize character over cheap thrills, this one’s a gem. I still catch myself thinking about that final reveal months later.
