But surrounding the lower keyhole was a second, deeply etched emblem: a stylized crest depicting a crowned serpent holding a broken blade—the exact, unusual drawing that my little brother Leo had hidden inside his sketchpad!
It was a dual-lock system. The brass key I held in my hand could only unlock the upper tumbler. Without the matching secondary key or token bearing Leo's crest, the massive stone door would remain permanently sealed.
"It requires both," I whispered to myself, realizing the terrible truth.
