"Gianna," Nevan said, standing in the doorway of the terrace. He was forty-five now, his hair more salt than pepper, but his frame was still the solid, unyielding iron of the Shield. He held a short-wave radio in his hand, the static coming from it sounding like a death rattle.
"What is it?" I asked, setting down my shears. My hands were stained with the green oil of the harvest.
"The Mars Colony," Nevan said, his voice a low, jagged rasp. "The archaeologists at the Chryse Planitia site. They found it, Gianna. They found the 'Prime Directive.'"
