“Enough running. Enough begging. Enough mercy.” Mercy. Thαt word didn’t exist in me αnymore. These people hαd tαken everything from me. They killed my pαrents. They destroyed my life. They mαde me αn orphαn αnd left me broken. They mαde me lose my unborn child. And now‚ they wαnted to tαke my life too. No. Not this time. Mercy wαsn’t α fucking option.

He stepped forward, then wrapped his arms around me from behind and rested his chin on my head. He continued, "Give me one more chance, won't you? I want to marry you with everything I am and everything I have." I leaned back into the warmth of his embrace, listening to his steady heartbeat and feeling the salty sea breeze that drifted through the window. The pain of the past was like a deep scar in my soul. It would never disappear, but it could be soothed by tenderness. My life had descended into hell because of Damien, and now, it seemed, it would find its redemption through him, too.

Grace cut her off firmly. Mercy swallowed hard. Her gaze slid back to the triplets, lingering on Adan. He was busy on his phone, but as if sensing her stare, his frown deepened. His cold eyes suddenly lifted and locked onto hers. Mercy’s heart skipped a beat. She snapped her head away quickly and typed a message to her team with trembling fingers: “A big problem may be coming for both the businesses and the mafia worlds.” Then she scrolled down and sent another text to a different contact. “Boss, how can I get Hindley’s ancestors' history?”

We were simply a way for them to make money, and the moment any of us became a problem, they would deal with us however they wanted. Mercy couldn’t even stand properly the next day. She remained curled up in one corner of the room, barely speaking to anyone. Even walking to the toilet was difficult for her. We took turns helping her because she was too weak to do much by herself. We all wanted to comfort her, but deep down, every one of us was asking the same question in silence. *If they could do that to Mercy, what was waiting for the rest of us?* As we sat in that suffocating silence, terrified of our own shadows, the heavy wooden door was suddenly thrown wide open, and a guard barked out

If he was searching for the misery in my soul, then I guessed he would find it, along with my resignation. "Just k__kill me already." My voice had no soul. I had already come to the fact that I was going to die, there was no need for him to prolong it. A smile crossed his face, but it lacked life. " Beg me for mercy, I might just spare your life." Was he taunting me? He believed fully well that I was Ethan's partner in crime, why would he want to spare me? "Beg me!" He commanded, his voice striking like a whip.

"I'm sorry...Alpha Kael, please don't kill me." the maid whimpered weakly, snort escaping her nose. "Have Mercy." she begged. Alpha Kael scoffed. "The word MERCY has never been in my dictionary. Why?...because I only have mercy on those that deserve it. And just so you know, you are alive only because I'm being merciful, but that same mercy I have for you, is slowly slipping away and if I don't hear what I need to hear, consider yourself gone."

Mercy hopped up and let the room service in, a tray laden with coffee and pastries. She handed a cup to Jake, who sat up eagerly. “Okay, you’ve got my attention. Start talking.”Mercy took a sip of her coffee, savoring it. “Alright, so here’s the deal. We’ve got a big day ahead, but I’m not giving away all the surprises.” Jake raised an eyebrow. “Surprises? Mercy, you know I hate surprises.”Mercy grinned. “Yeah, but you love my surprises. Just trust me on this. We’re going to the art gallery first thing. Then we’ve got a few more stops.”

And still I held back, shaking, my teeth hovering at her throat, knowing that one heartbeat more would damn us both. Somewhere, in a softer part of the world, a siren complained about a different man’s mistake. The sound dragged a thread through my hearing that caught on a nail of memory: the boy in the alley the night before, the way his breath had paused when mine continued, the way my mouth had refused to stop until my will had arrived late. I have learned too many sermons to pretend I don’t know the text of this one. Mercy is not nice. Mercy is breaking yourself where it matters to save someone else’s music.

Selene’s shadows writhed around her, ready to strike, but she didn’t move. Corvin’s eyes locked on mine, furious and terrified and pleading all at once. “Willa,” he ground out. “Don’t—” Another filament jerked him, stealing the rest of his sentence. The Administrator’s many eyes fixed on me. “THIS IS MERCY,” it said. “FOR ONCE, AUTHOR, YOU CAN HAVE WHAT YOU WANT WITHOUT DESTROYING EVERYTHING ELSE. ACCEPT. I WILL SEAL TERMS.” Ink‑cords dug deeper into my skin, trying to wring an answer out of me.

I wanted to scream those words at him but my tongue refused to obey me. I was silent, tears flowed through my eyes but my lips were sealed. I could feel the burning anger from his eyes to every nerve in my body, my heart constricting at the immensity of the hurt reflecting into those black orbs and I knew it in the marrow of my bones that I had lost everything I wished for. It was an illusion of me believing that I deserved a chance at happiness or a family. Family or love wasn't meant for a curse like me. I had lost everything before it was mine. It was just a passing phase of my life, an illusion.
