I take a deep breath before reading it. “Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD your God, he it is that does go with you; he will not fail you, nor forsake you.” I looked up and closed the Bible. The verse is right; Fear not nor be afraid of them. What a beautiful verse? I closed my eyes and thought about the verse that I had read for a moment.

He exhales slowly, hand pressed to his side as pain flickers across his features. “Because you didn’t give up on me when I didn’t deserve you. And because… because I know what people do under fear. Under pressure. Under trauma. You weren’t acting out of malice. You were acting out of desperation.” I swallow back tears. “I’m sorry,” I whispers. “I know.” He lookedy down at his hands. “But forgiveness isn’t… one moment. It’s a choice. Every day. Even when it’s hard.” Then, softer:

“Perfect. One more. Mercy is weakness.” “Please...” “Mercy. Is. Weakness.” I look at them bleeding, crying, staring at me like I’m their last hope. “Mercy is weakness,” I whisper. “Louder.” “Mercy is weakness.” “LOUDER!” “MERCY IS WEAKNESS!” The shout tears out of me and something inside me just… snaps. He smiles like I finally passed the test.
