Her cathedral. She slouched into her best corner chair—stuffed, tufted velvet in tired blue—pullding out a book from her tote. A quiet night's reading before bed was now her ritual, and for tonight, she opened what was familiar and comforting: *The Light Between Oceans*. The book always bore its imprint on her. Loss. Forgiveness. Breaking and binding decisions. She opened to the top of it, and the world disintegrated. Somewhere in the city—several stories above, in a steel and glass building—Julian Blackwood lay in his dark, sleek bedroom, staring at the book she had given him.

It covered the payment for her rent and other things she felt were important but splurging on herself was something she only engaged in at Christmas because of the discounts. It was sad but it was her reality. She flipped the pages of the book she had been pretending to read for the last hour. She didn't get how someone could read under such intense concentration of sunlight. Those ladies on her P*******t board she spent hours on when she wasn't busy had deceived her. She slammed the book shut with an exaggerated sigh. She was going to die of heatstroke if she kept this up. “I was wondering how long you'll keep that up.” A voice called from behind her.

If he heard or read something or saw it, he knew it. His second geeky habit was he read a lot. Gio had the unfortunate distinction, since the eighth-grade end of the year awards ceremony, of being the only student in the history of his school to have officially read every book in the school library. It was an addiction. In the space of one week, I have finished fifteen books. Each book is as large as Oxford dictionaries. I never knew I could read so fast, I truly have been starved of the fictional world. I started to fear that I may risk emptying the royal pantry. The more I read, the hungrier I got. Perhaps I had the pregnancy for that. Or maybe both. Who knows? Louis looked at me like I was some kind of strange creature, “have you even had a bath within the past week?”
