Novel & Cerita The Rory Gilmore Book Club

It was a healing, liberating existence — a complete contrast to the cold, opulent but suffocating mansion where Rory had grown up under constant surveillance and control. Rory had found real joy and purpose working part-time at the local bookstore called “Pages & Tides.” She spent her days surrounded by the comforting smell of old and new books, recommending stories to customers, organizing reading events, and occasionally writing her own private thoughts in a journal she kept hidden in their bedroom drawer. The work was simple but deeply fulfilling. It gave her the independence and sense of normalcy she had craved her entire life.

I add, “you’ll stay here for a day or two. No drugs. No lies. I need to know you’re sober before you go anywhere near him.” The silence stretches between us, taut as wire. Rory stands, pacing, her bare feet whispering against the floor. She stops at the wall of photographs, the ones of Guillermo’s birthdays, the family trips, even one of the three of us before everything broke. Her fingertips trace the glass over our mother’s face. “She’d hate this, you know,” Rory says softly. “Us. Like this.” Her voice cracks at the edges, and something in my chest gives way, just a little.

The picture book has been reprinted seventeen times (now with sequels: The Dragon Daddy’s Treehouse, The Warrior Queen’s Second Battle when I had Lily at forty-five, The Day Grandma Beat Cancer Again just because the kids demanded a version where I punch leukemia in the face). Tonight isn’t a birthday or an anniversary. It’s something bigger. Rory’s voice suddenly cuts through the chaos. “Everyone to the oak! Now! Emergency family meeting!” The kids obey instantly (they always do when she uses that tone). Even the adults drift over, curious. We stay on the steps. This is their show. Rory stands on the old stump (worn smooth from decades of speeches) with James and Lily flanking her like gene

The only thing that pulls me from my thoughts is hearing Rosemary speak up, now from a chair next to mine. “I think I might have Harold try out one of the scenes from our naughty book club this week.” Rhonda and I share a look through the mirror. My entire body shakes as I try to hold back a laugh. It’s no use—the snort that comes from my body is completely unladylike and probably a little rude. Rosemary’s shrug tells me she doesn’t mind. “What, girls?” she asks incredulously. “Surely it isn’t a secret that Harold and I go to pound town.”
