Until I Wrote Him
I add, “you’ll stay here for a day or two. No drugs. No lies. I need to know you’re sober before you go anywhere near him.”
The silence stretches between us, taut as wire.
Rory stands, pacing, her bare feet whispering against the floor.
She stops at the wall of photographs, the ones of Guillermo’s birthdays, the family trips, even one of the three of us before everything broke.
Her fingertips trace the glass over our mother’s face.
“She’d hate this, you know,” Rory says softly. “Us. Like this.”
Her voice cracks at the edges, and something in my chest gives way, just a little.
