Even Elliot had left the beach house that morning. It was a bit strange, but she oddly liked the feeling of having the house to herself. Although the house was quite large and daunting, she had occupied herself all morning with the books Gabriel lent her and Emilia. He gave her at least five. They were all classics, he had mentioned while briefly apologising for them. Lori didn’t mind, she would read them all the same. Even though she was more of the contemporary novel type, she started on one of them and quite enjoyed it.

Those were the guidelines she picked up from the elderly lady who measured her for her uniform only the day before. "I can't believe we'll be gone for three months without seeing our families. Noah will be missed." Rory turned into the winding lanes and cast a sidelong glance towards Caroline, who was engrossed in her book. "What genre is that? it doesn't look like romance." She asked Caro, who had closed the book and was guarding the page with her index finger so she wouldn't lose track of where she was.

There were piles of books on her table, and there was a request for more books that she had drafted out. “My lady, let us leave.” Liora begged, following behind me impatiently. I checked through some of her books, and they were mostly fiction. My eyes caught a particular book under a pile of books, and I reached for it instantly. “My lady, you're going to get me killed.” Liora groaned as I picked up the book. “THE ADVENTURES OF LADY KILMARTIN.” I read out loud. “Huh?” Liora mumbled.

“You’re playing with something you don’t understand.” The voice wasn’t Kael’s this time. It came from the doorwaysoft, tired, and all too knowing. Rory. She looked pale, shadows bruised beneath her eyes. “That book smells like death.” “Most useful things do.” “What are you doing with it?” I paused, then smiled. “Reading.” “Liar.” She stepped closer, her look hard. “You think I don’t know what that is? The Rite of Reclamation. It’s banned even among your kind.”

The man was a billionaire and could pay for anything he wanted as long as he could get it. I moved close to the books and tried reading some of their titles. They were mostly novels, and a little gasp fled my lips when I saw my favorite dark romance series, sitting on the shelf. The Ryan Rule by Sadie Kincaid. I loved the four books of that series so much, and although I’ve read them all, I wouldn’t mind re-reading them again. I didn’t have the money to purchase the books so I borrowed from a schoolmate. But now they were here.

“How’s the pain?” “I’ll live.” I grunted as I picked up the books she had dropped to distract myself from the pain of her checking over my injuries. “I found those on Stephanie’s bookshelf.” She chuckled. “Thought you could use something to keep you busy. I picked that one because the author has my name.” I looked more closely at the books she had brought, chuckling when I saw that one was titled ‘The Rogue Queen’ by Rory McCauley-Hayman. I waved the second book titled ‘Breaking The Bond’, in the air.

It was a healing, liberating existence — a complete contrast to the cold, opulent but suffocating mansion where Rory had grown up under constant surveillance and control. Rory had found real joy and purpose working part-time at the local bookstore called “Pages & Tides.” She spent her days surrounded by the comforting smell of old and new books, recommending stories to customers, organizing reading events, and occasionally writing her own private thoughts in a journal she kept hidden in their bedroom drawer. The work was simple but deeply fulfilling. It gave her the independence and sense of normalcy she had craved her entire life.

It isn't fair. I told Nancy that I wanted to just give up, that it must have all been a mistake, and that the stranger was wrong. But she adamantly disagreed. No one has found the bodies yet, though, so theres still a lingering hope out there that they're alive. I sigh as I crawl under the thick quilt, flicking on the lamo beside me as I pull out my latest find at Barnes and Nobels: The Winter Garden by the famous Kristin Hannah. This woman's books are truly amazing. Then, after an hour long reading session, I find my eyes beginning to shut against my will, so I set down the book on the bedside table and shut off the lamp. ~ The next morning...
